Senior Technical Writer / Documentation Manager

If you’re a strong technical writer, experienced in writing about systems and development infrastructure for technical audiences, and have a head for and experience with document management, we would love to talk with you! One of our best partners is looking for someone to step in as technical writer #1 and help organize and document their key infrastructure and systems for developers - making sure that new employees can get started, current employees can find the information they need, and team members can keep things up-to-date. It’s a great opportunity to build documentation that people need in a high-functioning, well-run engineering organization. 

What you’ll be doing:
  • Establishing the big picture of internal developer documentation - how should it be organized, how can people find what they need, how can it be kept up-to-date; this includes both tools and strategy/structure
  • Documenting key processes and systems for new and current developers; understanding developer personas and goals
  • Working with engineers across the company to understand and document systems
  • Communicating clearly, professionally, and consistently with your team and your client
What you bring:
  • 5+ years as a technical writer, focusing on software engineering audiences - this doesn’t include UX or marketing writing
  • Meaningful experience in document management and strategy, even if it wasn’t a job title; be able to describe how you’ve wrangled documentation
  • 1+ years documenting open source systems (Linux, open source containers like Docker/Kubernetes, etc.), or something reasonably equivalent; must have some non-Microsoft experience
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills; you function well autonomously with drive and self-direction, but you’re also comfortable being part of a team and working in partnership with your engineering colleagues
  • Ideally, experience with Confluence or similar, Google Docs, and GitHub
This is a contract role, scheduled for a minimum of three months, depending on how work extends. Our partner is in Downtown Seattle: the role will be remote through at least the end of May, and will likely remain partially or fully remote when the office reopens.
